Hej Lennart!
Jag har kommit i kontakt med en svenskättling, vars förfäder bosatte sig i Manitoba alldeles i början av 1900-talet. Han och hans familj finns fortfarande kvar i Canada och så här förklarade han för mig varför hans förfäder hamnade i Canada:
At that time, the Canadian government was actively recruiting settlers to populate the vast amount of potential farmland in the three prairie provinces (Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta). It was the practice then that an individual, immigrant or otherwise, would be given title to, or ownership of, a quarter section of land (160 acres) if he/she settled it - meaning to build a house and required farm buildings and to bring a specific amount of land under cultivation. This was referred to as homesteading, and the folks that undertook that rather daunting task were called homesteaders. Because of the hardships that homesteaders had to endure, they quickly earned the respect and admiration of their neighbours and the population at large.
