Hej Jan and Marit:
Jan, you must have better eyes than I for looking at the Ellis Island manifest. The pages that Axel are on are very hard to read.
As far as the mines, in the early 1900's there were many small mines in Itasca and St. Louis County. They were natural ore mines and they have all been abandoned now in favor of taconite mining.
It looks the Mower County area is the best bet. I will keep this in mind in my searches as well.
