If the daughter Mildred was born 08 May 1916, that would make her parents married after she was born.  Something to ponder later.. I looked up Ancestry.com family trees and did not find anything more than what follows:

2177. Charles William Pfaff Jr.
His nickname (Gram and Mom only) was Dunie which came from the fact that as a child his sister Myla could not pronounce jr. and she said Dunie instead.
Dad was a pole vaulter on high school track team. Played tennis with Les Stoffen who later won the us open doubles title with Elsworth Vines.
Hitch-hiked across the county from Los Angles to New York
prior to going into the navy 1933.
Honorable Discharge Record
United States Navy, Service #380-79-89
Date of enlistment August 15, 1933
Date of Discharge August 2, 1937
He serve for four years. Was on the battle ship Maryland which could be identified  
by a gun turret in the mast. He was a helmsman who steered  
his ship aground when going through the Panama canal. The fault was with the officer that called out wrong instructions that he had to follow. Once he was put in the brig on bread and water for a couple of days because he drank a cup of coffee in the officers mess.
He began work in Chicago after the Navy as a clerk at Sears Roebuck & company. He attended Northwestern night school
studying accounting. Room with several other fellows before he met mom. His job was cooking and he feed them a lot of popcorn. He when to work for Montgomery Ward in 1945 as an Auditor. He did a lot of traveling.
When into business with Russ Fulton making toys in Dekalb Illinois. Then he returned to Montgomery Ward as retail budget manager.

Mildred Jane Applegate
She graduated from University of Chicago High School.
As a child she spent summers at Big Blue lake cabin owned by Ralph Sheavon who was a freind of her father. She and a friend painted the privy pink. Called themselves Professional Pink Privy Painters.  
Kept a scrap book of the live of president Hubert Hoover.
Was trained as an acrobatic dancer. Performed on the ship Fogey and she took to Europe.
Graduated from Shimer College in Illinois. Was a girls school then but has since become co-ed. She was nicknamed
apple because she was fat. After college she lost the weight and was very thin for the rest of her life.
She wanted to be a writer.
