I am hoping that someone could help me identify the source of my ancestor's surname. The earliest spelling of the name is Hamarthon; other spellings include Hammartorn and Hammarton.
My ancestor Erik Jonsson was born in 1714, Ore parish and died in 1772. He married and had four sons of which two survived.
His son, Pehr Erson was born on 12 December 1747 at Dalfors, Ore parish. The Husförhörslängd records for 1751-1771 Ore parish is where he is first documented as Pehr Erson Hamarthon. His brother Jonas also took on the Hamarthon surname, but did not produce any descendants.
This family name was kept for generations; the last Hammarton in Sweden died in the 1950's at Selånger. His brothers changed their names to Hamilton and Hammarberg and moved to Canada.
Pehr Erson was a hammer smith; I thought that this may have something to do with the name but my Swedish isn't good enough to make any connection.
