Of course they could! People did not have to involve the church minister to take a trip somewhere. Probably, Carolina Sophia and Samuel Otto first met and got to know each other in Gävle, and at the turn of January/February 1865 he got a chance to visit her in Stockholm - maybe his employer in Hudiksvall sent him there on some commission.
He (or any other man) would hardly had married a woman who was eight months pregnant with another man's child.
