Hi Ron,

Johan Magnus Månsson (b. Dec. 19, 1830) was a farm-hand in Råddehult, Vimmerby rural parish (A I:14 p. 177), when he married Clara Christina Persdotter on Aug. 24, 1858 in Tuna parish. She was born on June 23, 1838 in Knastorp, Tuna parish, and the daughter of Per Danielsson and Stina Cajsa Svensdotter. Johan Magnus moved to Knastorp where they had two children, Christina Josefina (b. 1859) and Johan August (b. 1866) (A I:16 p. 236 and A I:18 p. 244). In 1869 they emigrated to North America together with her mother. The departure of this and two other families from Tuna in May 1869 is described by the school teacher Johan Swensson in his book Tuna skate (1944), also related in Tuna - en smålandssocken (1999). They settled in Watertown, Minnesota. According to the book, Johan Magnus' father Måns Hansson had heard that settlers were short of tools and therefore he brought a big chest filled with iron lumber, old axes and different primitive tools - for which he had to pay an excess luggage charge of 6 rixdollar on the ticket to Gothenburg... (According to the book he joined the other persons to America in 1869, but according to church records he emigrated from Knastorp five years later, in 1874.) One of their neighbours, my great great grandfather, Johan Hindriksson (1827-1912), who lived in Knastorp, is said to have been present when the families left for America in 1869. Furthermore, a letter sent from America in 1934 by a Mrs. Hendricks (apparently identical to Christina Josefina above) says that Johan Magnus died in 1928, over 79 years old (age doesn't match, though), and his wife Clara in 1920.
