Hi Joseph!

Sorry I do not know what happened to “Uncle Zacharias”!

A few notes about “our inn”:

A young English lady  travelled in 1794 from Oslo to Gothenburg and visited the inn and posting-station of Herrestad .

She had planned to stay overnight in Uddevalla , but when they came to Herrestad the coachman  stopped and refused to go any further .
It was late and the steep hills had exhausted the horses.

“Since there was nothing else to do I entered the inn, but was almost driven out again from the odour that hit me
from a room where 8 or 10 people were asleep besides the dogs and cats that were scattered on the floor. Two or
three men and women lay on the wooden benches , the others on old chests. One of them woke up and stared at me. I would have taken him for a ghost if his shirt had been white enough to contrast against his dirty greyish face, but since  his clothes did not suggest a shape of a ghost I passed him without fearing anything else then the
fumes hovering around me, gently finding my way past bowls, milk-buckets and washing-tubes that stood on
the floor . After having climbed a dilapidated flight of stairs I came to a bedroom. The bed did not look inviting.
I opened the window, took some clean towels from my night-bag and spread them over the bed. In spite of all
nausea my exhausted  body received some rest.
At dawn I was awaken by singing birds and went down to see to the horses.
I hurried through the room downstairs – a bizarre mixture of pigsty and human dwelling”.

In November 1743 Per Persson  and three other inn-keepers got together  and  came to turns about a table of rates, which was presented to  The District Court.

The travellers pay for each person and meal:

Homely fare                                                   8 skillings
Better fare                                                    12
Breakfast: bread, butter, cheese and meat     4
A “kanna” of double beer                              8

A smaller one                                                1

Barley-straw                                                 2
Long straw                                                   3
Grease for the wheels                                   2/3

Even if the inn was a bit dirty it seems that it could provide both food and drink!

Oh, it got a bit jumpy!!!!!!!!
Don´t know what I have done.

Just saw your mail! Funny thing is that my husband´s grandfather was born in Herrestad in 1858. He and Hulda might have known each other!

We would like to say hallo to our cousins!
