             OLOF CARLSON
Olof Carlson, son of Jonas and Sigrid Kolson was born in the town of Undersvik ( now Soderhamn, Province of Helsingland, Sweden ) on march 19, 1858. He died suddenly on April,3,1940. In early life he was babtized in the Swedish State Lutheran Chuch. His father and grandfather, Olof Kranz was born in the same community, but his great grandfather, Christoffer, was born in Christiania (now Oslo) Norway, and migrated to Sweden in his early days.
In july, 1868, Jonas and Sigrid Kolson and the two boys, Olof and Christ landed in Quebeck, Canada. They followed the Saint Lawrence river to Montreal, then reached Praire du Chien, Wisconsin, and finally arrived at Lansing, Iowa, on the Mississippi river. The following winter was spent at Calmar, Iowa, where the mother died. The father took the two boys and moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, for a few month.
The year 1869 found them on a homestead in Liberty township, Cherokee county, Iowa, about eight miles south of Paullina. The father remarried, and reared another family of ten children of whom nine are still living. Olof and Christ grew manhood in this community.
The year 1882 found Olof filing a homestead in Sanborn county, South Dakota. February 4, 1885, he returned to meriden where he was united in marriage with Miss Annie Nielsen, an immigrant girl from Denmark. They lived for the next five years near Forestburg, S.D., returning to O'Brien and Cherokee counties in the autumn of 1890, where they had lived ever since. In 1926, they moved to Cherokee, where Mrs. Carlson died  February 1, 1940, and was buried on her fifty-fifth wedding anniversary.
In addition to his full brother, Christ Carlson of  Paullina, mr. Carlson left four half brothers- Elof J and Pat Carlson of Minneapolis, Ruben Carlson who lives on the old homestead in Cherokee county, and Nels Carlson of  Aurelia, Iowa.  There are five half-sisters living in Minneapolis - Miss Edith and Stella Carlson, Mrs. Olivia Bjorklund, Ethel, and Elsie (Mrs. J. Locke)
In addition, Mr. Carlson left four sons and four daughters. They are Dr.Avery L. of Oskaloosa, Leslie H. of  Linn Grove, Harvey M. of  Ruthon, Minnesota, Emmett W. of Alta, Iowa and Mrs. Wm. Riedemann (Fern) of Remsen, Mrs. O. T. Henderson (Hazel) of  Paullina, Mrs. Henry Abels (Flossie) of Cherokee, and Mrs. Oliver Salzkorn (Elvie) of Linn Grove. There are in addition 14 grandchildren  and two great grandchildren. One daughter died in infancy in 1906.
Mr. And Mrs. Carlson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in Paullina, febr 4, 1935 and were preparing to celebrate the  fifty-fifth anniversary  February 4, 1940, but the death of Mrs. Carlson turned that event into a funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Olof Carlson were father and mother to nine children to whom they had given everything. But they were much more. They were mother  and day to 14  grandchildren, and to countless neighbors throughout the 60 years they lived in Cherokee and O'Brien counties.
