FOSTIAK - THOMESEN marriage - Kansas City, MO - 21 September 1917
by John O'Brien
"The Kansas City Journal" (Missouri)  Saturday, September 22, 1917

COMES FROM ALASKA TO WED.

There was a quiet wedding at St. Paul's Episcopal church yesterday.
The bride was Miss Marie THOMESEN, 23 years old, a pretty school
teacher from Klukwan, Alaska, who had come half way around the
world to marry her soldier sweetheart, First Lieutenant Simon
FOSTIAK, United States army, who met and wooed her amid the
eternal snows of Alaska, when he was stationed at Fort William H.
Seward as a quartermaster sergeant in the regular army.  Lieutenant
FOSTIAK is under orders to proceed to Fort Snelling and aid in
training the men of the infantry branch of the national army.  He recently
was commissioned after attending the army training camp.

The bride was born in Norway.  Because of her linguistic ability, she
has been teaching at a government school forty miles from Fort
William H. Seward.  Simon FOSTIAK is a native of Kiev, Russia.  He
enlisted in the coast artillery branch of the regular army in 1910.  He was
promoted rapidly and when detailed to Alaska bore the rank of
quartermaster sergeant.  Then it was he met the pretty Norwegian girl
and they became betrothed.  His ambitions were higher than a
non-commissioned rank, and when the world war began he received
permission to train for a commission.  This he earned and has been
assigned to the infantry.

Rev. J. D. RITCHEY performed the marriage service.  The bride and
groom will be at the Hotel Baltimore for several days.
