In 1907, 21 miles south of Elgin, Elmer M.Hegge (age 21) began his homestead. Elmer was born in Minnesota a son of a drummer boy, who was blinded during the Civil War. Elmer's mother died when he was only 3 years old and his father died when he was 11. His father died of simple urinary retention. Elmer was required to become self-sufficient at a very early age and he could barely wait until he turned 21, thus qualifying for his own homestead.
5 years after starting his homestead, Elmer married Alma Ostrum. Alma's grandparents owned a large shipping company in Sweden, which fell on hard times after several ships, carrying valuable cargo, sank in a bad storm before the days of insurance. Alma's father then immigrated to the United State, where he worked as a mason and carpenter for many years in Winona, N. D. where Alma was born. They later moved to Selfridge, N. D. where he homesteaded during the days of great turmoil amongst Indians and white settlers. Their family became personal friends of Indian Chief, Sitting Bull, and Alma's father actually made Sitting Bull's casket, after he was shot by the Indian police shortly after Custard's massacre.
