Navnet "de Grieff" er måske en variant af navnet "de Graff"??

Så "Bernhard Diederichs" (altså Bernhard søn af Diederich) ville muligvis være hans hollandske navn, da han var født. Efternavnet "de Grieff/De Graaf/ De Graeff etc" kan således være faderens titel/arbejde eller at Bernhard faktisk har været en "graaf/schepen" i sin hjemby Niekerk? Hans relative unge alder i betragtning gør dog at det snarere er faderens arbejde.
