Hi all,
I'm hoping someone can provide some insight to research on my great grandfather. His name in Sweden was Jan Olsen Ströte. He was born 8 February 1859 in Östmark, Värmland and lived on the Vallarne farm. In 1881 he moved to Åhlsta, Dahl parish, Västernorrland. In 1883, the Dahl parish records show he moved to Njurunda parish in Västernorrland. However, Jan doesn't appear on the Njurunda move-in records.
The next record I have of him is his marriage record in 1891 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He married Mary Olsen (f 1870 near Trondheim). Jan Olsen Ströte was using the name of John Hagfeldt by 1891. Högfeldt was his mother's last name.
If anyone has any ideas as to what genealogical resources might prove helpful or possible avenues of research to determine where Jan Strøte went in 1883, I would be greatly interested in hearing them.
A map of the Njurunda and Dal areas of Västernorrland show that they are near the Gulf of Bothnia. Another possibility that occurred to me is that he may have signed on as a crew member of a ship, but I'm not sure if that area was known for shipping.
