I had a look at the church record of Laholm though www.genline.com, your ancestor is listed under Bonarp kvarn ( Bonarp mill). Page 32, household examination roll or clerical survey, in Swedish: Husförhörslängd (HFL) 1880-1887. Birth place is listed as Laholm (parish). He came from Veinge parish in 1883.
I then checked the birth records of Laholm, and I did find his birth record. He was born at Ebbarp, Laholm parish, parents Gudmund Johansson and Elna Andersdotter. Genline ID: 100013.13.59600.
I found his family in the HFL of 1887-95 at the mill at Kattarp Södra no.2 (Södra=south). GID 1820.29.71300. It seems that Nils Peter had a brother August, born in 1869, who also left Sweden for America - in 1887.
