(COLUMBUS, Ohio). The Rev. Georg Almo, 37-year-old deaf Protestant Episcopal minister of Columbus, drives more than 22,000 miles a year to give sign-language sermons in southern Ohio . There is an ironic note in this for it was an automobile, the first he had ever seen, which brought deafness to the minister when he was 12-year-old in Stockholm, Sweden. While crossing a street he heard a motor, but never having seen an automobile, he thought it was the sound of an elevator in a nearby building. The shock as the strange vehicle stopped inches from him, deprived him of his hearing. He started his work among the deaf when he was 19. Since then he has been a delegate to international conventions for the deaf, such as at Norway (192-), Finland (1929), and Paris (1931), where he was vice-president of the gathering of 800. In 1925 the Rev. Almo founded a fraternal society, the D.--, (Dovstumsallskapet  Manilla), for the deaf and their instructors. He was president of the society until he left Sweden for the United States in 1932. Until shortly before he came to this country his name had been Svensson. But because of his efforts among the deaf, King Gustaf V, by royal decree, bestowed upon him the name "Almo", full name: Bengt Olof Georg Almo.
