Detta fick jag från amerikanskan som söker Carl Ellis Olsen

Kristiania, Norway (originally domiciled in Arendal, a coastal town. This will be important in the next paragraph.) on December 9, 1871 to his destination listed as Chicago. He is 33 years old, a mason by trade, and sails on the ship "Hero" of the Allan brothers line. This ship did not take him all the way to North America; rather he likely transferred to another ship in the U.K. somewhere. There is no information given here about his parentage, an unfortunate problem that is exacerbated due to a problem with the Kville parish church records which I will discuss later.

Given the close time of your Carl Olsson's departure from Norway to his marriage to Helene Evensen in Chicago, I decided to check the same emigration database for Helene. Sure enough, Helene Evensen is listed as having departed from Kristiania on May 10, 1872. She married Carl on June 9, 1872 in Chicago, less than a month later! She was domiciled in...Arendal prior to departure. Due to her young age (20) at the time, and the fact that Carl was present only in Arendal and nowhere else before his departure it can be reliably given as fact that this town is where they met and decided to be married and leave to America in. Helene sailed on the "Albion" which was also of the Allan brothers line.

Now for Carl. Carl was born in Kville parish on April 26, 1838. Unfortunately, a look at the listing for Kville on the familysearch website indicates that this parish chuch suffered a fire in 1904, causing the loss of a significant number of records. Essentially, all records prior to 1860 (with the exception of a pastor notebook that goes from 1599-1814) has been lost forever. I must admit, when it comes to catastrophic losses of information this is a very serious one. There is room for hope however. If you can find the names of Carl's parents and/or siblings, it may be possible to find their death listings after 1860 which might in turn reveal their parentage as well. A family bible, scrapbook, maybe some notes that they wrote down may reveal enough information to go on. Ask your relatives for help on this.
