Make-shift workmanship, as in bits and pieces put together to make them work at what they were never intended for (often done in a hasty and perhaps a little careless way). Mackverk would be used in a slightly derogatory but also admiring way - how someone could make a machine out of nothing basically; a machine that wouldn't always run true but would nevertheless most often - after a bit of cajoling - get the work done.
A typical sentence would be: Ja, se den där maskinen - den var allt ett riktigt mackverk, den! Perhaps the translation would be: Ah, that old machine was a real piece of work!
