Pono, maybe you should try to explain what an eighth homestead was? I think it was an eighth part of a mantal. In the very old days a mantal was a farm large enough to support a family, and the actual physical size depended on where in the country the farm was located and if it was good farming land or not.
With more extensive farming and some breaking of new land, the size of a farm, that could support a family, was diminished and a mantal could also be divided into smaller parts, like 1/8.
