Hi Art,

Unfortunately the street Pelarbacken does no longer excist and the area is now called Björns Trädgård opposite to Medborgarplatsen. If you want to see how the houses looked like in the 1800 century, I can recommend you to go to Nytorget and at the eastern side there is still a block of old houses. Perhaps you have been to Stockholm before? Otherwise I can recommend the Stockholm city museum (http://www.stadsmuseum.stockholm.se/index.php?sprak=english (http://www.stadsmuseum.stockholm.se/index.php?sprak=english))where they have house models of some areas and also maps and pictures.

It was called Pelarbacken (Pelare = pillar, backe = hill) because there were 3 big and high stones pointing out where the execution place were located. The stones were called Kalvarie with pictures of Golgata and one of them can still be seen at the Museum of Medieval (http://www.medeltidsmuseet.stockholm.se/index.php?sprak=english (http://www.medeltidsmuseet.stockholm.se/index.php?sprak=english)).

I live in the part of Stockholm called Norrmalm (Norr=North, Söder=south, malm=area outside the city centre) and I hope you will have a nice stay in Stockholm next summer.

Best regards,
Annika
