Hi Jenny, According to Wikipedia the word 'malm', as in SÖdermalm, Norrmalm and Östermalm is related to 'mala', which means grind/mill/mince and 'mjÖl', which means flour. Malm actually means an area consisting of gravel and sand. The three different 'malms' are thought to have received their names from Brunkebergsåsen (the Brunkeberg Ridge), a part of the Stockholm ridge, which is a rubble-gravel ridge that runs (or used to run; much has been removed) in a north to south direction from Norrmalm.

Kind regards,
Ann
