They were not really old, many people could not afford to marry earlier. They were often working as farm hands or maids or in service, with food and board, and did not have any way of having a family. Maria Sofia got her father?s name. She emigrated with her husband Anders Fredrik Carlsson and children in 1886 (see below) Most people had patronymics ie -son or -daughter names after their father?s first name, illegitimate children got their names in various ways then. Children in the country, at least under school age did not often use surnames. Before the name law of 1901 you could use any name freely, except noble family names.
