Did Sweden have conscription during the 1800's? I notice in my Grandfather's biographical sketch in Svenskarna I Texas, Elroy Kolonien, that he had completed his beväringsplikt. If this is military service, at what age would a young man be called for service, and for what duration? Family history tells that he was 19 years old when he emigrated to Texas, and brought along his 16 year old brother, Karl Sigrid. Evidently, Karl would not have performed his service.
