Hello Eileen!
The best way is to name the county (landskap) then the parish (socken), kind of book (cencus, birth, marriage etc)number of the book (ex AI:7) and the year (ex 1861-1865), the number of the page and maybe Genlines GIDnumber, and name and birthdate of the person you are asking about.
Ex: Värmland, Södra Finnskoga, Husförhör (census, short hlf), AI:7, 1861-1865, sid. (page) 162.
Christian Olsson born 1788 in Grue, Norway Wife: Margareta Eriksdotter, born 1799 in Dalby.
Genlines GIDnumber is only good for people with Genline, so if you use the county-parish-booknumber method, moore people can respond to your questions and quicker.
If you go to the column to the right on this webpage and click on Ämnen(=subject), then choose Landskap (=county, the one you are interested in), and then choose the socken (=parish) you want, then you only need to refer the number of the book ex: AI:7, page 162 and the name of the person.
This is the order the books are in the archives,(county-parish-year-number),so if you refer in this way you should be okay regardless what company you (or others) use.
