Born in Bloomington, Indiana, Carmichael was the only son of Howard Clyde Carmichael and Lida Robison. He was named Hoagland after a circus troupe The Hoaglands who stayed at the Carmichael house during his mother's pregnancy.[4] (Wikipedia)
