Thank you, Alf! Mats Eriksson was apparently a captain who died in battle. I read somewhere that it was common for military men to take new surnames. Not sure if that's true. I'll have to see if it's applied correctly to my great, great grandmother. I assume that she'd need to be descended through the male line.
