Severin went to Norway in 1879. He was a sailor, and was temporarily living in Canada during the 1900 Norwegian Census. But as far as I know, he did not go to America. His son (my grandfather), Karl Gustav Karlsen (born 1886 in N?tter?y, Vestfold, Norway) went to America in about 1906.
I don't know how I will figure out if Karl Nilsson was Severin's father or not. Another researcher told me his father was unknown. He was born in 1854 (in Brastad) when Gustafva was only 16.
