Good Evening,
More by luck than good judgement, I have found the site. Sadly, my Swedish is about as good as my Martian, so I hope that the English speaking amongst you can assist.
I am trying to gather information about the Friberg family who, by my records, came from Malmo. My great grandfather was Karl (or Carl) Johann Friberg, born April 1857. He was a Marine Engineer who spent some time in 1896 in South America working onboard a ship. His father was Andreas Friberg, who was born sometime near 1835 and lived in Malmo.
I have more information on Karl (who changed his name to Charles John Friberg when he came to live in Wales.
Hopefully, there is someone that can possibly assist in linking my family in Sweden together.

I think I have found the birth of your great grandfather, but in Landskrona rather than Malmö. It is a smaller town some 25 miles north of Malmö, and at the time had thriving industries based on agricultural exports and shipbuilding.
In the census of 1880 I found one man called Karl Johan Friberg born 1857 and living in Malmöhus county:

The second Carl Johan was born April 28 and baptised May 3 to the journeyman blacksmith Anders Friberg and his wife Johanna Nilsdotter living at Tärnan #22, which seems to fit your great grandfather.

During the ceremony child was held by the working maid Kjersti Nilsdotter from Säbyholm. The witnesses were farmhand Sven Nilsson and Ingrid Persdotter from Säbyholm and the farmhand Nils Persson from Annelöf. The mother was churched 1 June.

The father Anders is said to be at the sugar refinery and has no birthdetails. The mother Johanna is born i Säby parish 4 June 1835 and moved in from Säby in 1857. Later in the same year the whole family was crossed out as they moved Per Christenssons huose at Öster Wärn #22
Östervärn, which is an area in the eastern part of Landskrona, is in another volume of the household examinations, volume AI:33, and # 22 is found on page XXX

According to this entry, the father Anders moved in from the sugar refinery in 1857 and was born 28 July 1830 in Annelöf. The mother Johanna, as we know, moved in from Tärnan 22. A younger brother Nils Otto was born 11 November 1858.
I havent followed the family much further than this. Many working families who were too poor to own their own house, moved every other year and it can take som time to trace all the places they lived at. So I leave all that fun to you. (http://aforum.genealogi.se/discus/clipart/happy.). I also havent followed up on that part of the census stated that Karl Johan was a widow in 1880. He would have been a rather young widower at age 23 and it would be worthwhile to check the marriage records. To search and see Swedish records you will need a subscribtion, either with http://www. arkivdigital.net (http://www.%20arkivdigital.net) or with https://sok.riksarkivet.se/ (https://sok.riksarkivet.se/). If you have a current Ancestry subscription they also have some records, but not of the same quality as the other providers.
If you want to trace your ancestors further back in time, Säby and Annelöf modern spelling Annelöv are countryside parishes just outside Landskrona. I think it is very likely that the witnesses from Säbyholm, the manor in Säby parish, were Johannas sister and brother as their patronyms all indicate that their father was called Nils. It is also possible that the witness from Annelöv was Anders brother, which would mean that his father was called Per.

Additional info:
Carl Johan Friberg was married to Anna Christina Mauritsson. They had a child, Anna Signe Maria, June 11 1879. Ten days later, June 21, the mother dies from child bed fever. Carl moves to Landskrona October 1880 and the child is moved to another block. Have not followed it, but cannot find any signs in the cencus 1890.
In December 1880 in Landskrona Carl is engaged to marry Elvira Berggren. However, he leaves for Copenhagen in May 1881 and the engagement is cancelled July 6 1892.

Both of you, We are absolutely staggered by the amount of information you found in such a short time. We cannot begin to thank you enough for shedding light on his life.
Following Copenhagen, it appears he spent some short time in South America, as we have his ship's records up until 1913. He then lived in South Wales and we have the family records from then until his death in 1916. These records can be provided in anyone is interested in following his ancestry up until the present day. This includes a second marriage and eight(?) children which led to my marrying his great grandson.

Gwyn! The daughter, Anna Signe Maria born 11/6 1879 leaves for Amerika at the age of ten! See Malmö Caroli BI:8 attest no 182 dated 10/6 1889. She was living with her grandfather and his youngest children when leaving. Malmö Caroli AI:99 page 261. Together with whom, I wonder.

Marianne, That's VERY interesting information. I've had a look at the USA immigration, but can't find any information on her arrival. Obviously, I'm not very familiar with naming conventions, so would it be likely for her to be travelling under her grandfather's name perhaps? (I'm guessing you are referring to her Maternal grandfather's name?)
Can someone please also explain Tarnan #22 From the description, it sounds like a farm, but I'm not able to guess where it would have been located? Also, If I understand correctly, is it likely that the following information is talking about relatives? As in Sven is related to Kjersti and Johanna? and Ingrid and Nils are also related?

Tärnan 22 is the name of the block where they lived in Landskrona. (A tärna is a sea bird, a tern or sea swallow. Landskrona is at the sea shore.) The information on the witnesses at Carl Johan's christening does'nt say anything about their relationship, but witnesses were often relatives.
Anna Signe Maria left June 12 from Malmö via Copenhagen with destination New York. Here is the emigration list from the police in Malmö:

Gwyn, the Child lived together with her Paternal grandfather Anders Fribergs family. He and the wife had at least five more Children at home at that time. He became a widower in 1884.
Kristina, I guess you will try to find Anna Signe Maria i New York? About the passenger list, she must have had some company, don´t you Think?
Her uncle Axel Fredrik Friberg Went to Copenhagen in 1888, perhaps he continued to New York and was there to meet her. I will try and find anyone else in her family leaving for Amerika...

After some (considerable) time, I'm rebuilding the tree. Unfortunately, a lot of it was lost after my father passed away.
Re-reading some of the above, I'm having doubts in my mind about how to confirm which of the two Carl Johann's mentioned above are the correct ones. Short of DNA evidence, how would it be best to try to determine who is my g-grandfather? Is there anyone that can guide me on this
Sadly a trip to Sweden is not in my near future, at least until I can find out if I have living relatives there.

It´s # 54 in birth list, born on April 28, 1857. The following entries are all about him. Of course, we are not totally sure that it is your man.

As can be seen on the last parish record, he died on the 7:th of June 1908 in Malmö S:t Petri. I cannot look at the estate inventories at ArkivDigital from work, but hopefully someone else can help you - It should be easy to locate the inventory through the register: https://arkivdigital.se/aid/info/v112846 (https://arkivdigital.se/aid/info/v112846)
So finding the inventory should be a piece of cake and hopefully there is something written about his sons whereabouts that will prove this is the correct person.

A slight side questions, which I hope my Swedish friends here can answer for me.
I'm seeing a number of people appearing on my tree with duplicate names. It's looking like parents had a child, named it, then after it died very young, they've named a second child born later with the same name.
Is that something that would have been or still is, in practice today? or am I looking at simply errors in information recorded?

On the topic of Anna Signe, I think i've found the details of her arrival in New York in July 1899 on the SS Hekla (2) part of the Thingvalla line. She arrived alone it appears. The sad part is, the only census that she may have appeared on was destroyed in a fire.

Why cant she be in a 10 year later Census? Do you know that she didn´t live that long?

it was the 1890 census which was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1921. Later census's aren't showing her (so far) but I'm hoping it's because she was married or the name altered during that time. The problem is, New York was an entry point, so she could well have moved to other states between her arrival, and the next census.
