Titel: Birth record translation help
Skrivet av: Mark Zajac skrivet 2013-06-15, 01:01
Hej!

I was wondering if someone could help me with translating this birth record into English.  I am trying to learn Swedish but do not know enough and the script is somewhat difficult to read.  It is the birth record for my 5x great grandmother Catharina Andersdotter born on 5 Mar 1765 at Hökakullen in Höreda parish, Jönköping.  This record caught my attention because of the name And. Mag. von Gertten who was a noble in Jönköping who lived from 1728-1788.  I would just like to know what it says about him in the record to clarify whether he was really Catharina's father since she and her descendents grew up as peasant farmers, not nobles.  Was she perhaps an illegitimate child?

She was illegitimate child, but as far as I can see von Gertten was only one of the sponsors.

Actually, it says: hwars fader är efter Modrens berättelse And(ers) Mag(nus) von Gertten (whose father mother gave as A. M. von Gertten, literally: whose father according to the mother's story was A. M. von G.). The witnesses to teh baptism are given after the letter W (Wittnen) (=witnesses).

Thanks so much for your help with that!
Do you know if something like this would have been common, a woman claiming a noble fathered her illegitimate child?  I'm not sure whether I should believe it or not.

Thanks again for the translation help!

A nobleman fathering an illegitimate child was by no means uncommon; the woman would not have gained anything by hiding the fact.
Often, of course, a private deal was made for support of a child whose father remained undisclosed.

Ok thanks!  What I was kind of getting at was whether the mother's story is believable.  Would she have an incentive or more to gain by fabricating a story that claims that a nobleman was the father, rather than a commoner?  Or were women typically honest when naming who the father of their illegitimate child was?

Getting alimony from a wealthy candidate could be easier than suing a penniless potential father. The only way to find out whether von Gertten was the real father would be to have a DNA test taken from one of his descendants and from a descendant of the illegitimate child.

Thanks for your help and thanks for that much clearer image!  Can anyone tell what the mother's name is?  It looks like Lisa Sirensdotter, but I've never heard the name Siren.  And what is the word before here name?

Hi Mark!

The mothers name is Lisa Svensdotter (Swensdotter). I might be her at AI:1 Höreda p 57 and AI:2 p 101 Hökakullen. She is called änka = widow, in the birth record from 1765. In the first parishrecord: Elisabeth (Lisa) Svensdotter 30, son Sven 9, daughter Maria 6, Catharina born 1764 (1765) and daugther Lisa b - . AI:2/ widow Lischen (Elisabeth) Svensdotter b 1733 Höreda, daughter Lisa Månsdotter b 1773 Höreda.

C:4 Höreda p 87 *1773-01-19  Elisabeth
The woman Lisas illegitmate child at Hökakullen. The mother claims the childs father is the dismissed ryttare (soldier on horse) Sundborg.

Best regards

Britt-Marie
