Bengta KILGREN and her 3 sons, Oscar Wilhelm Paulson, Carl Fritiof Larsson and Anton Julius Larsson, emigrated from Stora Harrie 1 April 1892 with destination being Pullman/Chicago, Illinois, USA.  How can I find the name of the ship and their route from Sweden to the USA?  I have not found them in USA arrivals.  Thank you!

Port police records from Malmo show they left 7 April with ship Argo, Dominion line, think Argo was a feeder ship to England, but not sure.

According to http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_line.asp?ag=wilso&ye=1892&sh=argo1   Argo went for Wilson Line. They sailed from Scandinavia to Hull. Then Bengta and sons probably went to Liverpool to take another ship sailing for Dominion Line.

Another passenger who left with Argo from Malmo on April 7, 1892, was Olof Falk of Minneapolis.
He left Liverpool on April 14 - perhaps together with Bengta Kilgren and other who travelled with Argo-

this is not about arrival to the United States, but about one of the family members - perhaps you are aware of this:

Thank you so much for the information!  Yes, I had found William O Paulson and Anton Julius Larson's naturalizations.  Bengta and son Carl, who went by Fred, have remained elusive in the states but I'm not giving up!!

Bo,
I would very much appreciate additional help.
Does the Malmo port police records give any further information on Bengta and her sons?
Did emigrants from the Malmo area sometimes travel to Hamburg and from there to the US or Canada? Would you please look for Bengta and sons in the UK Outward Passenger list 1890-1960?

I am curious about surnames: Bengta is listed in Sweden Baptisms 1611-1920 with the last name being Nilsson but in household examinations she goes by Bengta KILGREN.  Her father was Nils Kilgren.  I understand about the _son and _dotter but why the change?  The same is true for her brothers, Hans and August.  Any ideas?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Sharon!
It´s very common when the migrants camed to U.S. that they change their last name. I´ve several of this person who chosie to replace their last name. For an exampel- Favoretti would be Johnson and so on...Why? I dont have the anserw, but so it is

Sharon, the records from port police inform us that they had paid 310 Swedish Krona for the ticket -for the entire family.
Bengta Kilgren, widow, 51 years,
Carl Fritiof Larsson, 10 years
Anton Julius, 9 years.
Pullman Illinois as destination.

They went to Hull with Argo but I cannot find them in UK outward passenger list. Incorrect indexing of family name is probably the reason why.

There must be a misunderstanding here. In the birth records children are not listed with surnames. See pictures from Ask CI:1 1820-1842 p 102, left side and right side.

Oscar Wilhelm Pålsson (Paulson) listed same page as Bengta, Carl Fritiof and Anton Julius. His ticket was 155 Swedish Krona. Same destination.

Kristina,
Would you please interpret the birth record for Bengta? The Sweden Baptisms I had found information in came from familysearch.org (The LDS records)

Thank you to all who have helped me with information!

The birth record left side:
Under the first headline, Föräldrarnas namn o hemvist (Parents name and residence):
Sadelmakaren (saddler) Nils Kihlgren och hustru (wife) Kirsti Pers dotter

Under the second headline, Faddrarnas namn och hemvist (Wittnesses name and residence):
Susc. Åboen (farmer) Ola Olssons hustru Marna Påls dotter från (from) Toarp i Billinge socken (parish)
Test. (witnesses): Åboen Nils Andersson i Lilla Röke, Smedgesellen (smith journeyman) Olof Kihlgren från Örtofta församling (parish), Drengen (farm hand) Per Larsson från Billinge socken, pigorna (maids) Petronella Hans dotter No 1 Sannarp och Bengta Lars dotter från Billinge.

Susceptrix is latin for godmother, who carried the child to its christning. The witness Olof Kihlgren could be a brother or nephew of Nils.

Right side:
Headlines: Barnets namn (name of the child), mk/qk (male/female), Födelsedag( birth day), Dopdag (christning day), Moderns ålder (mother's age), Anmärkningar (remarks)
Bengta, d 2 Febr, d 7 Febr, 33 år, Hustr Kyrkot. d 14/3

There is a mark for male also, but it is a transport from previous page. The remark in the last column shows that the mother was kyrkotagen (appr. blessed and cleaned) at a ceremony in the church March 14. Before that ceremony she was considered unclean by the church. (Terrible habits!)

All clear?

Will someone please translate Bengta's birth record?  Also, where can I find burial records and/or photographs of tombstones from 1880's in Stora Harrie?  Thank you.
