What parish records do I look under?

I have traced Gustaf Linder, born 14 Jun 1867 in Hova, mother's name Is Johanna Sophia Svensdotter (unmarried).  It looks like he changed his name several times.  At first it was under Gustaf Augustsson (so I though maybe his father was August ?).  But he ended up as Gustaf Linder.  I found a census record for 1910 that has him living in Jönköpings östra, but I'm not sure where to look under Jonkopings.  There are several parishes and trying to find the right one has been difficult.  I would like to find the household records for him for 1910.  Thanks, Carol

Hi!

In this husförhörslängd he is noted as Lindencrona and Augustsson.

That is very interesting because when he is baptized his mother is noted as a maid at the Kammarherre/Chamberlain (August) Lindencronas home in Mariestad.

Klas,

Thanks.  Would it be common for the child to take the name of the head of the household where she works or is this an indication that someone in the household is the father?

Hi Carol!

I would say that Gustaf could not use the surname Lindencrona because it was a name reserved for the nobility. The partonymikon Augustsson was not something he would take just because his mother worked for a man called August. I think that the mother saw August Lindencrona as the father of Gustaf. But as I said he could not use the name Lindencrona. Perhaps they chose the name Linder instead? It was free for anyone to take a surname as long as it was not a name for the nobility.

Thanks again, Klas,

So does this mean that the father was likely August Lindencrona?  What type of nobility is the family?

I can not say that his father was August Lindencrona but I suspect that his mother thought so. This because the surnames Augustsson and Lindencrona were noted in the husförhörslängd. I guess that he or his mother told those names to the Priest. But you are not allowed to use Lindencrona if you are not a legitimate child to a nobleman with that name so he did not continue to use that name but switched to Linder. Is this a person you are related too? If so a DNA-test might help you if some from the Lindencrona family have tested themselves.

The Lindencrona is an "adlig" family. The first person who became "knighted" was Gudmund Lindeblad to Lindencrona in 1719. Wikipedia says that there were 63 persons with that name in Sweden in 2012.

Thanks again, Klas.  Yes, he is a 3rd cousin.  I have done my DNA, on ancestry.com and on FamilyTree DNA, where I might have better luck.
