Titel: Translating occupation
Skrivet av: Lynette Case skrivet 2022-09-23, 17:36
I would greatly appreciate help translating the new occupation of Johan Karlsson.
Johan Karlsson’s occupation of laborer (arbetare) is crossed out. I am unable to figure out what his new occupation is as well as what the “pt” means.
Thank you for your assistance.

Skrädd[are]  = tailor.

No idea about the pt. abbreviation, though.

The abbreviation is "ft", and I think it means "fattig", "poor" -- there are plenty of people that get the mark, but only households of crofters and workers, tailors, cobblers -- not farmers with land ...

Thank you. That makes sense as they were very poor.
So would this have been a farm even though nobody living here has the job description of farmer or farm laborer? Besides this tailor, the rest of them are laborers (arbetare).

Torhult 2, the farm, starts on p 441 of that book, and has a number of farmer households without the "ft" mark.
Johannesberg under Torhult 2,  where the tailor with family lived, probably was either a "torp" (a croft) or a "backstuga" (a house on the farm, without access to farming land -- there's a Wikipedia article on the subject (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backstuga), read the paragraphs about the legal meaning -- it did not have to be on the side of a hill ...)

Thank you. I will look at that article.
