Titel: Need help with 1646 tax records
Skrivet av: Victoria Cihla skrivet 2021-09-22, 19:06
In researching the 1646 tax records for Gashult, Torpa parish, I found there are two different tax records for 1646 (different from each other) and I wondered if anyone can help me understand them.

The first one lists Håkan Månsson:

Mantalslängder 1642-1820 Kronobergs län 1642-1820 (G) 5 (1646) Image 2630 / Page 262
https://app.arkivdigital.se/volume/v840129?image=2630&page=262
v840129.b2630.s262

The second one lists Nils Månsson:

Mantalslängder 1642-1820 Kronobergs län 1642-1820 (G) 5 (1646) Image 2840 / Page 283
https://app.arkivdigital.se/volume/v840129?image=2840&page=283
v840129.b2840.s283

Gashult was separated into two parts (Söregård and Norrgård) later - not sure if this helps explain it....

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Vicki

Hi Vicki!

Of what I understand the first one is the traditional taxation list while the second is a little different. We can see in the first document that Håkan is just in possession of half of Gashult while the second part is öde/waste. In the second document we can se that many farms are either waste or the farmers are dead. So is the case with Nils Månsson (I guess a brother of Håkan Månsson?) who is noted as dead there. This was after the peace treaty in Brömsebro 1645 and during that war 1643-1645 (called Torstensons war after the Swedish Field Marshal who attacked Denmark from the South and ocupied Juteland) the Danes went into Sweden from Halland, which was then a part of Denmark, and attacked the civilians who lived close to the border. Many farmers got their livestock stolen or killed and farms burned down. During the wars the areas close to the borders could suffer a lot while they could benefit from the trade during the friendly years.

Hi Klas!

Thank you for this very interesting information!  I wondered if Nils was dead.  He doesn't appear in any later tax records, but it looked like quite a few others were also dead too.  It seemed very strange.

Adding some context is always helpful and very much appreciated!

Thanks again,

Vicki
