Titel: Help in reading record
Skrivet av: Carol Kemp skrivet 2021-09-19, 03:11

Olof August Jansson, 7 Oct 1844, Amneharad, and his wife Carolina Svensdotter had three daughters who emigrated to America - Elin Amalia left in 1896, Hedvig Fredrik left in 1898, and Maria Elisabet left in 1907.  It appears that Hedvig Fredrika, 22 Mar 1879, came back to Sweden the year her mother died, 1920.  I have found a household record for Amneharad with some notation regarding Hedvig and her sister Maria.  Could someone please tell me what this says?   I think Hedvig may have married, had a daughter and moved to Verberg?

I have attached the portion with the notation, and this is where the record can be found.

No, Hedvig's daughter Dorit moved alone to Hedvig's sister Maria and her husband the goldsmith Johan Alfred Karlsson in Varberg in 1922, https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/00135038_00301.
Hedvig remained unmarried and died in Amnerhed 1942-01-01.

Sune,

Thanks for your help.  What is confusing is that I found a birth record in ancestry.com for Dorit that shows she is the daughter of Johan Karlsson and Maria Elisabeth Jansson.  I could not find this on riksarkivet as I did not see any records for 1921.  And I found a document of a report of birth of children borrn to American parents with those same people as Dorit's parents.  So I am thinking that the priest who recorded this had it wrong?  I am sending the links to the records I found:

Is it possible that she really is Hedvig's daughter but was registered as Johan and Maria's daughter?

I found a 1920 census record for Johan & Maria.  They were living in Rhode Island, USA, at the time of Dorit's birth, so it is true that Dorit is Hedvig's daughter, later adopted by Johan & Maria.

Again, thanks for the help.  Carol

Here you will find a copy of the birth book 1921, Statistics Sweden (SCB) - collection item, Excerpts from birth, marriage and death books 1860-1949, SE / RA / 420401/01 / H 1 AA / 2360 (1921), picture time: A0032199_00574 https://sok.riksarkivet.se/bildvisning/A0032199_00574. "Parents are Johan and Maria in Varberg" !! I think that in some way they are trying to hide that this is Hedvig's daughter and if Johan and Maria adopted Dorit, there must be adoption documents, but where?

Sune,

I think that you are right.  The original household record showed that Dorit was Hedvig's daughter and that she moved to Varberg to live with her aunt.

Thanks, Carol
