Titel: Help with marriage record
Skrivet av: Bradley Bystrom skrivet 2021-01-23, 20:03
Greetings,
I am seeking help with the marriage record for Jöns Christensson and Anna Jacobsdotter (see attached) Morlanda kyrkoarkiv, Födelse- och dopböcker, SE/GLA/13376/C/2 (1745-1780), Image ID: C0041693_00026, page 37
What I can make out:

16 Sept 1756
(? what does this say ?) Jöns Christensson
(? what does this say ?), and pigan (maid/maiden/servant girl)
Anna Jacobsdotter of Käringöns
Another person has Jöns Christensson as coming from Lysekil. Hoping to maybe confirm or deny that.

Once again, any and all help greatly appreciated.
-Brad

A farm-hand is called "dräng" in Swedish, but every "dräng" is not a farm-hand...  :) In this case it means (as it usaually does in marriage records) that he is unmarried (in other words not a widower). There are no farms in Lysekil.

And the same goes for maid and "piga". Anna is unmarried.

Thanks Jörgen! I was wondering why a farmer would move to the island of Käringön (where he lived after marriage). I know that it was mostly herring fishing being done on the island.

Ouch ... :-[

What are good english translations for "dräng" and "piga" in the sense of "not previously married" male and female, respectively?

Great question Staffan. Unfortunately there is no single word in English I can think of that directly translates over from Swedish here. At least not one that is in current use. In this case it takes several words in English to capture the meaning of the one word in Swedish.

Bachelor and maid?
The language in these old documents are not only Swedish, but old Swedish and thus sometimes hard to translate even to modern Swedish.
