I assume you mean Olaf.  All of his US census records say he was born in Sweden.  Unfortunately, I cannot find any ship records for the family.

Hi David, this entry from Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, 1916-1947 at www.familysearch.org looks to me like it is the Olof Olson whose family emigrated from Äsphult in 1865.

Djurröd CI:2 (1768-1845) Image 730 / page 67 (AID: v98138a.b730.s67, NAD: SE/LLA/13060) has the birth of Ola Persson on 31 Dec 1795.  Can someone read the names of the parents (the first names are clearly Per and Elna)?  Unfortunately Djurröd does not have household survey records until 1813 so finding the parents is going to be difficult.

I believe I found Ola on Djurröd AI:1 (1813-1817) Image 78 / page 69 (AID: v98122.b78.s69, NAD: SE/LLA/13060) where he moves to Skepparslov in 1816.  Unfortunately this parish does not having moving in records in 1816 so tracking in after that until he appears in Äsphult in 1829 with the birth of his first son.  I cannot find him in the 1813 to 1830 records, probably as pages are missing for the early part of that period and the last data seems to be for 1828.

Carl, I have Olof in the USA starting with the 1870 census in Chicago and then to Moline, Rock Island in the 1880 census.  I believe he moved to Kenosha Wisconsin around 1920 and died in Chicago 24 Feb 1924 and is buried with his wife Josephine in Kenosha.  The biggest problem with him is that he does not have a birth record as it appears he was born around the time they were leaving for America.

David, that is not easy to read, but Ola get a brother Sven on May 23 1801, Djurröd CI:2 (1768-1845) Bild 790 / sid 73 (AID: v98138a.b790.s73, NAD: SE/LLA/13060). The parents are Murges(ällen) (Mason apprentice) Per Djurlöf and Wife Elna Clementsdotter in Djurröd's House (i.e. a house on Djurröd's property with no farming land).

David, the death record for the Olof Olson who died in Chicago in 1940 indicated that his father was Peter O. Olson and gave his mother's name as Elna Orion, which is equivalent to Örjan.  While Peter Olson is a fairly common name, Örjan is not so common, and it appears clear that the mother in the 1870 and 1880 census is Elna Örjansdotter who emigrated in 1865 with her husband and children.  Also the headstone for Elna/Ellen indicated her husband was named Peter O. Olson.  Therefore it is likely that the Olof Olson you found in the 1870 and 1880 census is the one who died in 1940 rather than your ancestor.

Carl, in the 1870 census in Chicago Ward 18, I have Peter, Ellen (the parents), Nels, Anna, and Olof with dates that match the birth dates.  Two children have been added in the years since arrive Sophia and John.  All of these plus Gustaf added in 1872 appear in the 1880 census in Moline, IL.  I have seen the Olof who died in 1940 in earlier census and decided he did not match.

Leif, thanks for the information, the records in that area are not very good.  Anna Martinsson thought Ola's father's name was Giörslöf based on his birth record on Image 730/Page 67.  Look close enough to be the same person but looking at them, I am uncertain.  Looking at both, what do you think?  Thanks for the details on the property, etc.

Looking at Ola the name is probably spelled Giörlöf, but for Sven on page 73 it is completely clear that his name is Djurlöf. Djur (=animal) is taken from Djur-röd and löf = leaf. Several people in Djurröd have names using Djur-. However, according to ArkivDigital, Djurröd has also been spelled Görröd, thus Giörlöf and Djurlöf are the same, with almost the same pronounciation, but Djurlöf beeing a more modern spelling. And animal is the modern interpretation, the old meaning might be something else. Thus this couple got two kids in Djurröd 1795 ann 1801, then the wife died 1802, but so far we know nothing about them before and after that period. Elna was probably not born in Djurröd, Per might be born in Djurröd but his father was probably not named Djurlöf, as Per probably took that name as a Mason. Does Anna know more?

Anna said that she thinks she agrees with you.  She suggested looking for the marriage which I believe is 6 Apr 1795 in Djurröd CI:2 (1768-1845) Image 140 / page 8 (AID: v98138a.b140.s8, NAD: SE/LLA/13060).  It appears they are both from Maglehult.  His name is Per Mansson at this time, if this is the correct marriage record.  The timing is about right to have their first son at the end of December of that year.

Hi David, here is proof that you have the wrong Olaf Olson in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.  As you already know, this is your ancestor in the 1900 census:

Name:   Olof Oleson
Event Type:   Census
Event Year:   1900
Event Place:   Mt. Pleasant Township Morrison city Ward 1-3, Whiteside, Illinois, United States

This is your ancestor from the Emibas CD:

b. 5/14/1863 in Mjällby, Blekinge län (Blekinge)

Olof was the son of Ola Nilsson and Karna Jönsdotter.  Ola Nilsson died 4 Aug 1895 in Mjällby and in his Bouppteckning (estate inventory: Listers häradsrätt FII:42 (1894-1895) Bild 5350 / sid 533) it was stated that his son Olof was in Morison, Ill., Nord Amerika.  Incidentally, Olof had a brother Per born 2 Mar 1873 and a sister Bengta born 18 Aug 1865 who both were living in Morrison in 1895 according to the Bouppteckning.  Bengta was married to A. B. Anderson.

Carl, that is very interesting.  This linkage has the advantage that the immigration year matches the census which was a concern (not that census are always correct).  In addition I have found none of the brothers or sisters in the current set are familiar to me.  I will also request the marriage license for Olaf and Catherine Irion from Whiteside county as these have useful information to help in confirmation.

There is a Peter Olson in Union Grove in 1893, immigrated in 1883.  Do you know when he emigrated?  If so, he and his offspring are not familiar, not that this is critical.  I can't find her in 1900 or beyond, although it is hard to say what she changed her name to in America.

David, if you haven't already obtained it, you can download Olaf's death certificate at https://www.cookcountygenealogy.com/, which is the website of the Cook County Clerk's Office.  You'll have to register and there's a $17 fee for each certificate.  It's possible his parents' names will be listed even though that information wasn't in the index records for him at Ancestry.com and familysearch.org.

David,

I think you refer to marriage no 2 1795. It is Per Bengtson married to Elna Persdotter, thus not the right couple. They are found at Djurröd AI:1 (1813-1817) Bild 163 / sid 159 (AID: v98122.b163.s159, NAD: SE/LLA/13060). It does not say her last name, but when their son Bengt is born, Djurröd CI:2 (1768-1845) Bild 740 / sid 68 (AID: v98138a.b740.s68, NAD: SE/LLA/13060), it say that her name is Persdotter, and they live in Maglehult, thus the right couple. In the marriage record his name really looks more like Mangtson, but it must be Bengtsson. They are married May 5.

Anna, yes, but the question is when they actually traveled. I don't think 8/5 1865 is the day that they got an Attest and started to travel.

Carl and David, I am confused. You talk about your ancestor, but is it not two different persons? And the one we are investigating now, is it the right Olof at all?

Leif

David, Olof's mother and sister Mathilda emigrated to the US in 1897 (Mjällby AIIa:1 (1897-1911) Bild 277 / sid 266).  Here is the mother from the Emigranten CD.

Leif, I believe that Carl has found that the initial Olaf Olsen that we have been tracing previously, who emigrated in 1865, is not my ancestor.  As Carl pointed out correctly, the 1900 census is a known truth as my grandmother is listed along with many other known relatives.  In this census, Olaf says he emigrated in 1881 which matches the other Olaf that he found from Mjallby.  Sorry for the confusion and extra work (although it might help Anna).  I was following previous work on my ancestor and got misled.

Carl, Ancestry suggests that they are in Hunter Jackson Minnesota in the 1900 census with great name matches (mother and daughter), birth (Karin is off a year but the month matches) and arrival dates.  Mathilda's findagrave record for her death in San Jose, 1959 has her exact 7 Sep 76 birthdate.  The only reason it shows up is that she married a Peter Olsen.  Thoughts?

If so, we need to find Peter Olsen in Sweden.  He immigrated in 1890.
