Titel: Question on 1767 tax record
Skrivet av: Victoria Cihla skrivet 2020-07-26, 00:07
Attached is a copy of a 1767 tax record with two fractions circled.  Do they represent the amount of land they farmed?  Are the two fractions related to each other or are they totally independent of each other?

3/8 mantal is the taxable size of the Torpa farm. Lars is registred for 9/56 mantal. If you sum up all x/56 it will be 3/8.

His farm is very small, correct?  Just a portion of the 3/8 total.

Do you ever sleep?

Thanks for your help!

There was nothing to do at work tomorrow so I'm free, if they don't call...

It is impossible to tell the actual size out of the mantal. The definition of 1 mantal is a farm big enough to provide for a family. We are not talking about  mom, dad and 2 children, it was more of a FAMILY.
The development of agriculture made it possible to provide for more people so the farms could be devided into smaller parts.

For example, the place where I live was taxed to 92/1000 mantal in 1896 (before it was a croft) and provided for a "modern" family. The area was approx. 250 acres, most forest. In these days the forest began to get a value (lumber, paper pulp). In the sixties it was considered too small and was merged with the neighbour farm and the fields planted with forest.
The neighbour farm was less then 200 acres but was taxed 117/1000 because of more fields.

A long way to say that you propably didn't get rich out of 9/56.

I thought that might be the case.  It's a bit tricky for me without knowing the terminology!

Thanks for all your help!
