Titel: Need help interpreting tax record
Skrivet av: Victoria Cihla skrivet 2020-06-16, 21:35
I need help in reading an 1838-1839 tax record for Pehr Bengtsson at Perstorp, Annerstad.  Can someone tell me exactly how  to interpret each slash mark after his name and the amount of tax he paid.  Also, there is a widow, Anna, listed.  That doesn't match up with anyone I know, any idea who might that be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  I've decided to try to tackle these tax records which are quite confusing.  :)

I'd like to clarify my questions -

I know that the slashes represent certain family members/relationships but there are no column headings.  So, is the first column or first slash the husband, the second the wife, etc.  I'd like to apply what I learn from this record to others I find.

Regarding "Anna" the widow,  could it be a servant, lodger, etc.?  I realize no one can tell me who Anna is.   I had originally thought it may have been a parent of Pehr or his wife, but neither is named Anna.

And, regarding the amount of tax, represented as 03,02. How do I read that?

Again, I appreciate any help I can get with this!

First slash is for "behållne rökar", I'm not sure exactly what that is. It seems to indicate that it is one household. Next slash means there is one male over 17 years old, next is one female over 17 years old. Simply husband and wife. Next two spaces are for men and women between 15-17 years of age, but none in this household. And next space is for boys below 15 years, one of those here. Next space is for girls, but none here.

The amount of tax is not stated here. How much men and woman of different age had to pay probably changed from year to year.

The header are on the first page of register in this book, which is page 3

Thanks so much for this information.  I will go back to that page and note the headings.  I know you started helping with this before but I wasn't ready to tackle the tax records.  This one was easy to read so thought I'd start with that.  If nothing else, it further proves the places where my ancestors lived even if I don't learn anything more.

Thanks again,

One other clarification - does the Enk Anna belong with Per Bengtsson family or is she totally separate from that family (as it would now seem)?

Thanks very much,

I think the numbers are year of birth, at least widow Anna was born in 1763. Her last name was Håkansdotter, I don't know if she was related to Per or his wife, she might only be renting that cottage. You will find her here:

Now I see that Per and Elin was born in 1802 and 1803 so that's what the numbers are. And they do not seem to have any connection to Anna, other than living in the same village.

Thank you VERY much!  I don't think there is any family relationship but this is very helpful information!  I think this is going to be an interesting project.

Thanks again!

Yes, I didn't catch that!  You are correct about 03 and 02 being their birth years!

Thanks so much for that!
