Titel: Help with tombstone inscription -- Ringsted, Iowa USA
Skrivet av: Signe Hangeland skrivet 2019-08-24, 19:44
Hej

Am researching my 2nd great grandmother who immigrated to America from Västergötland:  Johanne Mathilde Larsson

She married a Dane, Hans Andersen and they had nine children and farmed in Ringsted, Iowa, a primarily Danish Lutheran settlement.  She is buried there.

Their tombstone is difficult for me to understand and hope someone here can understand and explain.

Thank you for any help with this.

Thank you!   Can you describe the language choice, for example, is it a standard type or is it more Danish, or something in between?

Now I am wondering why she was cremated, or if there was a fire.  Cremation doesn't seem normal for a Lutheran community ca. 1905, especially in a very rural area with a lot of land for a graveyard.   The population there is still only 400 people after all these years.   Then again, I am not so familiar with Lutheran traditions.

The language i Danish. But ø is written ö as in Swedish.

I am not sure of the translation to ashes of "stövet", which is "stoftet" in Swedish. So I am not sure she was cremated.

Stöv means dust rather than ash, so I don't think there was any cremation
