Hello I am from New Caledonia, my ancestor Charles Peterson Stuart was a Swedish sailor born March 3, 1837 in Stockolm, I only have the names of his parents on his French naturalization extract (Magnus Stuart and Ingeborg Peterson).
If anyone could bring me more information about his parents it would be very nice.
Thank you
Franck Peterson Stuart

I found a Fredrik Magnus Stuart born 1827 in Arvika stadsförsamling AI:5 (1858-1867) Bild 54 / Sida 40

Dont know if it is the father or a brother perhaps? but it isnt a common name in sweden

The Stockholm Stuarts were high-status persons, while those named Pettersson (Peterson) were common people. It may mean that Charles was illegitimate and that his birth was hidden, as much as they could.

In this household record of 1849 we find Ingeborg Pettersson, b 10 Oct 1804. Her title is The Coachman Widow. She has a daughter Carolina Wilhelmina, b. 11 Nov 1838. The other persons are probably not related.

This is the journal of the birth of Carolina Wilhelmina on 11 Nov 1838. The mother is anonymous but everything points to Ingeborg Pettersson. Unmarried, age 34 and most interesting: It is her second pregnancy. The first one could be Charles but I have not found him.

Thank you very much Lena and Sven for your quick and interesting answers.
Regarding Magnus Stuart I do not think he is related to Frederik Magnus born in 1827 (his father was Frederik Adolph Stuart), but I found a Gustaf Magnus Stuart (1818-1888) who could be the father (even if a little young 19 years old), I did not find any other information about him on the internet.
For Ingeborg Peterson the track is interesting, I will look for Ingeborg born in 1804 (what does this nickname "the coachman widow" mean by the way?) and Caolina Wilhelmina born in 1838.
Again, merci beaucoup and hello from France

There is a comment for Gustaf Magnus: "Vistas i Storbtn." which means "Living in Great Britain". He died in Sweden.

Before Ingeborg took the surname Pettersson she used her father's soldier name Råbock. He was the soldier Lars Jansson Råbock.

Thank you Sven for all this precious informations.
Are there written records of the birth or baptism of Charles (Carl) Peterson (Pettersson) Stuart on March 2, 1837 in Stockholm or as a sailor ?
-
I have not found anything on Charles yet, but am still looking. You said March 3 before, which date is it?
Have you tried finding him in British records?
-
Sorry this is a mistake it is March 2nd, no I did not look in the British records since he was born in Sweden
-
I thought that he might have sailed on French or British ships to reach New Caledonia or the Pacific neighbourhood and left tracks in French or British ship records.
Is there any date to indicate at what time he left Sweden? What is the date of his naturalization? Come to think of it, it would be interesting to see such a document.
-
He declared in 1884 to have been resident in New Caledonia for 22 years, and as early as 1862 he had set foot on land. But before that he had to sail on English or Swedish ships, perhaps on board a whaler, and he probably had to leave Sweden between 1857 and 1860.
On his application for naturalization he declares that he can not show his birth certificate, supported by witnesses of notoriety, he says :
1) that he was born in Stockholm (Sweden), March 2, 1837
2) that he is the legitimate son of Magnus Stuart and Dame Ingeborg Peterson, his wife.
3) that he received for the first name that of 'Charles'

Nice! I have begun going through the sailor lists, starting with 1847.
-
I found no Stuart sailors at all.
For Petterssons, the nearest I can find is one Carl Magnus Pettersson, b. 26 March 1838. The last I see of him is in 1859, when he sails for Hull.
His father died in 1864 and Carl is listed as an heir together with his brother Johan Emanuel (3 jan 1833), but Carl is absent, sailing abroad, ("utrikes").

Would Karl/Charles forget his mother's name? Magnus Petterson was married (at least) three times, none of his wifes had the name Ingeborg:
1. Anna Christina Ström (Karl's mother), married 1832, dead 1844.
2. Carolina Eleonora Smitt/Schmidt, married 1849, dead 1853
3. Catharina Christina Wagerström, married 1854, dead 1862

Maybe we can disregard Ingeborg Råbock Pettersson. I found an earlier child of hers and that would match the birth journal of Carolina Wilhelmina, where it is said that that was Ingeborg's second pregnancy.
Mathias Victorinus was born 23 Feb 1826 in Gamla Uppsala.

He died from measles on 2 July 1828 in Uppsala.

On the other hand, I have found no information on Ingeborg between 1834 and 25 Feb 1839, so there is still some room for doubt.

Isn't there an index to Swedish births on Ancestry? Does someone know?
