Titel: Help with word in death record

In the church records for Follinge Jamtland the death record for my 5th great grandfather Pehr Olofsson Brunberg on January 28 1799 describes him as a "Nybyggaren" which Google translates as "colonist".  Can anyone provide additional information or explanation about that reference?

I would say "settler", someone who broke new land

Thanks. Must be similar to the way the word "homesteader" was used in Canada.
