Gary!

My explanation:

Actually it's a made-up name.
Consisting of two parts:
Ren = reindeer (or clean which I do not believe is used in this context)
ström - in most cases stream (like water-stream). But today perhaps current is an alternative.

A lot of other ström-names are constructed in the same manner - if you search this forum with +ström you will get a lot of examples.

One example is Ångström - in english Angstrom. This means Steam + ström. And if you search in Google for Ångström you will find information on another! famous swede.

'Ren' means in this case 'slänt' or 'sluttning', i.e. 'slope', or 'åkerren', or maybe 'vägren', i.e. 'headland' or 'verge', in the U.S. - according to my dictionary - 'shoulder'.

'Ström' - 'current' is of course a good joke, but I think we should translate it with 'stream' in the sense of flowing water.

Surnames are often based on place names that the first bearer had some connection to.

If he, for instance, was a soldier and served for the Renstad manor in Svanshals parish, then the Renström name would be an allusion to that place.

Is the meaning of the name Renstrom changed by spelling it Rehnstrom?

No, the pronouncation is just the same in Swedish.

Many Swedish surnames, including my own, has an extra h just as a decoration, it changes nothing in the way you say it.

I found a birth record from Klockrike parish for
Jacob Renstrom, who was born January 8, 1766.  I
can't determine the Swedish words to attempt a translation.  Can anyone translate for me?
The Genline number is 318.24.59000.
